A virtual reality approach to safety messaging.
Creating immersive safety scenarios.
Bringing safety to life through cutting-edge technology, the Safer Streets Virtual Reality project uses industry-standard tools—including a VR 'classroom in a box' and Insta360 kit—generously loaned by the Northamptonshire OPFCC and supplied by immersive technology experts, RiVR.
Client Briefings, Real-World Relevance
Each academic year begins with a fresh creative brief from the OPFCC, setting out current priorities in community safety. These briefs provide students with a live challenge grounded in public need, ensuring the content they produce remains timely, targeted, and relevant.

Full-Cycle Student Production
At the heart of this project are second-year university students studying BA Advertising & Digital Marketing and BSc Marketing subjects, who take the lead in designing and delivering the VR experience. They are involved in every stage of the production cycle:

-
Briefing & Research – Understanding real-world risks and audience needs
-
Ideation & Pitching – Generating creative responses to complex safety challenges
-
Storyboarding & Filming – Capturing compelling scenarios using 360° video
-
Editing – Refining and stitching scenes for a seamless immersive journey
-
Launch & Promotion – Showcasing the work at high-profile events
Crafting for Immersion
This is not a passive learning experience. Every student involved takes on a defined role within the full VR production cycle, reflecting real industry practice. Whether working as a researcher, scriptwriter, director, actor, camera technician, editor, or promoter, each participant contributes meaningfully to the project’s success. Students learn to approach the 360° camera as a point-of-view (POV) character—placing the viewer directly in the scene.
Best practices include:
-
Designing action and audio in all directions to maximise immersion
-
Using narration to guide the experience
-
Careful staging to reduce post-production edits
-
Considering transitions in and out of each scenario for narrative cohesion
Real-World Delivery
The finished product consists of short-form 360° videos optimised for VR headsets. These are delivered via a kiosk or trade stand setup at open days, safety events, and particularly during Freshers' Week. Operated by student ambassadors and the university security team, the VR experience introduces new students to the realities of the night-time economy in a safe, controlled, and highly memorable way.
With the freedom to look in any direction, users gain a truly immersive perspective—learning not just what to expect, but how to respond.

Finally the dissemination involves demonstrating the work at Merged Futures conference, and back to the client, writing about the experience for blogs, social media, engaging with press opportunities.
